The International Partnership for Service Learning

Service-learning responds to students' desire to be in the world, learning from experience as well as classes, and to put their education to use for the good of others.  The International Partnership for Service-Learning has originated, designed and implemented international/intercultural service-learning since 1982.

International Partnership programs unite academic study and community service, so that the service makes the study immediate and relevant, and the study relates to and supports the service.  By combining formal study with service to the local community, students find their learning takes on greater depth and meaning.  Working among community people brings classroom lessons to life, while the formal study broadens the students' understanding of their surroundings and gives perspective to daily impressions.

For the International Partnership,
service-learning is:
 

Volunteer Service

serious, substantive and truly useful

demands responsibility, commitment and leadership

draws on existing skills and builds new ones

& Academic Study 

focuses on the culture in which the student serves

utilizes the content and methodology of traditional disciplines, especially the liberal arts

taught and evaluated by qualified academicians, and credited by a degree-granting university
