Deadlines and Timelines
SEMESTER TIMELINE FOR STUDY ABROAD
The OIE will help you to plan for study
abroad but you need to remember that deadlines are critical to avoid
stress and to make the whole experience pleasurable. There is nothing
worse that being accepted, having your tickets, and then finding out that
you forgot to apply for your visa in time. Look over the list below to see
where you are "in the process" and what more you still have to
do.
Approximately…
Four months prior to departure

apply for your program and complete documents for the
host school and for L-RC
-
apply for your passport
-
check on entrance requirements for your host country

check out the air fares and shop for a good deal
-
meet with advisor to review what courses you will take
upon returning to L-RC
-
ask OIE staff for names of study abroad students who
know your host country

start the research on your host country and host
culture
-
if you plan on speaking a language other than English,
arrange for a conversation partner
Two months prior to departure

arrange for medical insurance and check the
limitations on the policy

get a physical and a health card with prescription
information
-
get the visas you require for study and for travel
-
start filling out the PRE-DEPARTURE HANDBOOK
-
attend orientation classes for study abroad (GEN 200)

purchase a travel guide or create your own
One month prior to departure

make sure that all the checklist documents for the OIE
are turned in

purchase travel cards (rail)
-
purchase ISIC card if host school does not provide
-
arrange for your money (traveler’s checks, ATM card,
credit cards)
One week prior to departure

reconfirm your flight and let OIE know by Fax or
E-Mail of any changes to itinerary
-
pack your bags and carry everything that you are going
to take for two blocks

take out half the stuff in your suitcase
