SEMESTER TIMELINE FOR STUDY ABROAD

The OIE will help you to plan for study abroad but you need to remember that deadlines are critical to avoid stress and to make the whole experience pleasurable. There is nothing worse that being accepted, having your tickets, and then finding out that you forgot to apply for your visa in time. Look over the list below to see where you are "in the process" and what more you still have to do.

Approximately…

Four months prior to departure

  • apply for your program and complete documents for the host school and for L-RC

  • apply for your passport

  • check on entrance requirements for your host country (see Consular Information Link)

  • check out the air fares and shop for a good deal

  • meet with advisor to review what courses you will take upon returning to L-RC

  • ask OIE staff for names of study abroad students who know your host country

  • start the research on your host country and host culture

  • if you plan on speaking a language other than English, arrange for a conversation partner

Two months prior to departure

  • arrange for medical insurance and check the limitations on the policy

  • get a physical and a health card with prescription information

  • get the visas you require for study and for travel

  • start filling out the PRE-DEPARTURE HANDBOOK

  • attend orientation classes for study abroad (GEN 200)

  • purchase a travel guide or create your own

One month prior to departure

  • make sure that all the checklist documents for the OIE are turned in

  • purchase travel cards (rail)

  • purchase ISIC card if host school does not provide

  • arrange for your money (traveler’s checks, ATM card, credit cards)

One week prior to departure

  • reconfirm your flight and let OIE know by Fax or E-Mail of any changes to itinerary

  • pack your bags and carry everything that you are going to take for two blocks

  • take out half the stuff in your suitcase
