The art
program offers majors in ART
EDUCATION, GRAPHIC
DESIGN, STUDIO ART
and a
minor in ART
THERAPY.
ART
EDUCATION
This
major is designed to
prepare students with
special interest and
aptitude in the visual
arts to teach in the
public schools with a
K-12 licensure. The major
may also be used as a
first step to graduate
school for those
interested in pursuing a
career in studio art or
those seeking to teach at
the University level.
From the beginning of
their undergraduate
experience at
Lenoir-Rhyne University, Art
Education majors are
strongly encouraged to
participate with and
become part of,
professional art
education organizations
at a national and state
levels. By so doing, Art
Education students will
be well acquainted with
current research,
teaching innovations, and
teaching opportunities in
the field.

GRAPHIC
DESIGN
Graphic
Design combines elements
of studio art, digital
technology and artistic
design to prepare the
student for a career in
today's world.
STUDIO
ART
Studio
art major: serving students who seek
preparation for a career in visual
arts as practicing professionals or as
a foundation for graduate school. This
major provides students with in-depth
study of aesthetic principles and art
history, and with hands-on studio
experiences in drawing, painting,
sculpture, photography and
printmaking.
MINOR
IN ART THERAPY
The
Visual Art and Psychology
Departments have designed
a program that allows
students with qualifying
prerequisites to minor in
Art Therapy. This
naturally includes
students from the areas
of Psychology, Human and
Community Services, and
Visual Arts. A positive
working relationship with
the staff of the Catawba
Valley Mental Health
Services and the
Catawba County Public
Schools allows students
the opportunity to have
valuable experiences with
trained professionals.

Internships
Several
internships are offered
in all areas to give
students on-site
experience, considered to
be of extreme value for
their future career.
Internships are also an
avenue that allows the
student to actively
participate with
community agencies such
as the public school
system, mental
health care institutions
as well as industries.
Field
Experiences
The
art program works closely
with the Hickory Museum
of Art (HMA). The museum
is an important source
for research and study.
It houses an exceptional
collection of art
masterpieces, and the
educational programs
provide for our students
teaching practice and
internship
opportunities.

Community
Involvement
The
art faculty, staff and
students are consistently
involved in community
projects and consultation
services. These
activities are related to
the University's mission and
its unique commitment to
service the community.
Students painted a mural
donated by the Foundation
for Hospital Art, and
donated the mural to
Hickory Hospice and Brian
Center (nursing home)
