GlaxoSmithKline
Women In Science
|
Two
students from the School of Natural Sciences recently attended the
annual meeting of the GlaxoSmithKline Women In Science Scholars
program at GSK in Research Triangle Park, NC.
Cynthia Watts and Cassie Mattox are the Lenoir-Rhyne College
student participants. Cynthia
is a junior from Cherryville, North Carolina, majoring in chemistry
and biology. Cassie is
a junior from San Antonio, Texas, majoring in biology.
The Women in Science Scholars program offers undergraduate
women in North Carolina opportunities that can lead to success in
the pursuit of science. A
GSK mentor is assigned to each student.
The mentor assists the student in learning what it is like to
practice science, demonstrates networking skills in the field, and
builds a relationship with the student that may last a lifetime.
Judy Johnson, a 1975 alumnus of LRC, serves as Miss Watts’
mentor. Miss Mattox’s
mentor is Christina Hill-Zabala.
Both Judy and Christina are employed in HIV research and
development at GlaxoSmithKline.
Currently 24 colleges and universities participate in the GSK
Women In Science Scholars program including Davidson, Elon,
Meredith, NC State, Queens, St. Andrews Presbyterian, UNC-Charlotte,
UNC-Greensboro, and WCU. Rebecca Tart, Ph.D.,
assistant professor of biology, accompanied the Lenoir-Rhyne
