Academic
Program
The Chemistry Program at Lenoir-Rhyne College has a long tradition of
excellence as reflected in the success of its graduates. We offer two
separate degrees in Chemistry.
B.A.
in Chemistry
The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed for the student seeking a general
background in chemistry with a focus on sales, quality control lab work,
education, or pharmacy. It is ideal for the individual whose interests
lie in the applications and laboratory elements of chemistry.
B.S.
in Chemistry
The Bachelor of Science degree caters to the student planning to do
graduate study, teach on the college level, or gain the most complete
knowledge in technical chemistry. This degree will also provide the
student with the background and critical thinking skills to be successful
in a variety of post-graduate situations, regardless of whether the
student's goal is to obtain a Ph.D or do industrial research within
a corporation.
The major is rigorous yet rewarding in that the graduate has many opportunities
available to them throughout their course of study and beyond. Among
these are graduate school, pharmacy school, research and development,
quality control, environmental analysis, teaching, and chemical or pharmaceutical
drug sales.
Facilities
and Equipment
The Chemistry Program is located on the second floor of Minges Science
Building. It has two atomic absorption spectrometers, HPLC, gas chromatographs,
infrared spectrometers, UV-visible spectrometer, nmr spectrometer, polargraph
and other supporting equipment. There is also a library, study room,
and ample laboratory space. Since these facilities are only used by
program participants, students are not pressured to rush through an
experiment to make room for another class to use the facilities.
Advisement
The Chemistry Program advises students majoring in Chemistry (A.B. and
B.S.), Pre-pharmacy and Chemical Education. Since the program is small,
the faculty are able to closely monitor the student's education. This
allows for the creation of opportunities through internships and special
topics courses that provide students with experience in areas such as
industry, special instrumentation, and specialized professional education
in polymers. One can decide the direction they wish to take once the
lower course levels are completed.
Pre-Pharmacy
Pre-pharmacy is designed to be a two-year program which prepares the
student for a three or four-year pharmacy school curriculum. The student
does not need to be Pre-pharmacy to apply to pharmacy school if the
student has completed the pharmacy course core in another major such
as biology or chemistry. Pharmacy schools are becoming increasingly
competitive in the selection process. However, Lenoir-Rhyne has had
a very high acceptance rate for students who apply. This success is
a direct result of the preparation and quality of our students.
Chemistry
Teacher Education
The Chemistry Education major completes the 30- hour education requirement
for the Secondary Teaching Certificate (9-12) as well as completing
either an A.B. or B.S. major in Chemistry. The student will be qualified
for a high school teaching position in most states.
