Professional Activities
Learning by doing. It is an interesting idea. Anyone who has ever tried to follow the assembly instructions included with a new piece of furniture, bicycle or model knows it isn't always easy to "just follow the instructions". Too often college programs expect students to read the book, listen to the lecture, (the academic equivalent of assembly instructions) and then find a job. But your future is much more important than a model of the Space Shuttle. The instructions are much more complex.
I am proud to say that the School of Communication and Literature at Lenoir-Rhyne College is based on a simple principal, students learn best when they have the opportunity to get practical experience.
This doesn't mean you won't have to read textbooks and listen to lectures. However we strive to find a proper balance between the classroom and experience. In addition to classroom instruction, you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of career-related activities.
At many larger universities and colleges, students do not have an opportunity to appear on stage, work at the college radio station, newspaper or television program until they are upperclassmen, (too many students competing for too few positions). Here at L-R, it is not uncommon for freshmen to actually work on plays, or write for the campus newspaper. The campus radio station and television program are open to all students. Don't worry if you don't have prior experience...that's why you're here. We'll have a position waiting for you. Learning by doing...that's what we're all about. Hands on experience, learning combined with some fun along the way.
Welcome to the Communication Program web page. If you have any questions, please feel free to phone or email me or any of our faculty. I look forward to working with you in the near future.
