Dr Berg  presented in Houston at American SAP User Group Conference
August 17th 2006, His presentation  "Making Sense of the Very Confusing World of SAP BI", was an overview of the tools, technologies and trends in the Business Intelligence tool space.
Dr Berg  presented in San Francisco at the Shared Insight Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing Conference
 August 16th, 2006, His presentation was "Enterprise Resource Planning BI: A Look at Capabilities and Value Propositions", an overview of SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle, JDE and Siebel BI approaches, strength weaknesses and development directions.
Professor Hull traveled to Alaska in July.

Dr. Miles and Ms. Diane Phillips taught in the CIMAS Science Academy program (July 10-28)
The College received a 3-year grant for Summer Academy of the Carolina Institute for the Multicultural Approach to Science at Lenoir-Rhyne College (CIMAS).  CIMAS is a Lenoir-Rhyne program that supports biomedical research and science education activities. The CIMAS program is designed to increase the numbers of ethnic minority students who enter college degree programs in science or mathematics and ultimately pursue careers in these fields.
Dr. Miles organized and taught the Computer Technology activities of the workshop and Ms. Philips (adjunct instructor in Math) organized and taught the Mathematics activities.  Ms Sarah Caudill (senior CS major) was the lab assistant for CS.
Dr. Miles conducted two workshops at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, England on July 6-7
The first Workshop was on Computer Ethics for the Information Technologist.  The second was on Assessment of Research Papers in Information Technology. She also participated in summer graduation of the University of Liverpool and was a guest at a faculty reception after the ceremony
Dr Berg presented in Orlando at American SAP User Group Conference
 May 17th 2006.  His presentation "BEx Broadcaster at International Paper", was a case study focusing on the implementation of SAP Business Intelligence at the world's largest paper company and the lessons learned and challenges.
 
Dr. Berg is back in the department after a 1 year leave of absence to work as a Project Manage for a large ERP application for with Anheuser Busch 2005-2006
Dr. Berg published article titled "Customer Approaches to Packaged DSS: Why so Different?" in the September 20, 2005  issue of DMReview
Abstract of the article: Over the last decade, companies such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle and others have offered packaged enterprise data warehouse solutions for their ERP systems. Today many customers are looking at ways to implement these tools. Frequently, their approach to packaged analytical products has been driven by a mix of deep skepticism and cautionary optimism. This article looks at what drives the implementation approach and how to avoid some of the most common mistakes.

Dr. Miles - Paper Presentation "Success in Group Projects" at ISECON 2005, October 8, 2005
Dr. Miles presented a paper ( with a colleague, Kathleen Kelm) in Columbus, Ohio  titled " Success with Group Projects".  The paper compared the success of group projects in both in-ground and on-line Computer Science courses, specifically looking at Software Engineering, Operating Systems, and Project Management classes.
Dr. Berg, Dr. Miles, and Professor Hull Attended Workshop on High Performance Computing
The CS faculty attended a workshop on High Performance Computing sponsored by Appalachian State University on July 29-30, 2005.   Dr. Berg presented a talk on the use of Grid Computing for managing large databases.

Dr. Miles attended an NSF Workshop on the OO Language, ALice
Dr. Miles participated in a workshop which introduced the programming language, Alice, and a discussion of its pedagogical uses in a CS program.  The workshop was hosted by DUKE University, May11-13, 2004
Professor Hull becomes Chair of Computing Sciences and Mathematics
Professor Hull, who served as the Interim Chair of the School for the past two years, became the Chair starting with the 2005-2006 academic year.

Professor Hull becomes Principal Investigator for Grid Computing Grant
2004 - Professor Hull is the principal investigator for the Grid Computing Grant which the School of Computing Sciences and Math, as part of a Consortium to Promote Computational Science and High Performance Computing, will participate as a partner to provide  students with an opportunity to work with other students across the state in high-performance computing.

Dr. Berg Joins the School of Computing Sciences and Math

2003 - Dr. Bjarne Berg has accepted a Tenure-track position in Math and Computing Sciences.  He taught as a Visiting Professor in CS and Math during the 2002-2003 Year.

Dr. Miles Awarded James Peeler  Professorship

Dr. Miles Awarded Roediger Distinguished Service Professorship

gailr.jpg (83990 bytes) During the 1999 Spring Honor's Convocation, Dr. Miles received the Roediger Distinguished Service Professorship, given each year to a faculty member who has given exemplary service to the college.
