FAREWELL TO HIGHLAND

On October 17, 2003, after 26 years of being housed in Highland Hall, Support Services for Deaf/HH Students was relocated due to problems with the heating system. You can find us now on the second floor of the Cromer Center above the Bear’s Lair. Our new location makes it easy for students to access our services. We are all settling in quite well. If you can, stop by and say hello.

NEW SITE ON CAMPUS

During your next visit to campus, look around and see signs of Deaf/HH Support Services. October 3rd 2002, 4 new banners were hung on lampposts across campus in celebration of our 25th Anniversary. Each banner states "Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Support Services Est. 1977."

HOMECOMING CELEBRATION

We enjoyed making and renewing friendships during our 25th Anniversary Celebration at Homecoming 2002. We were especially honored to have the first four graduates from 1981 to lead the parade as Grand Marshalls - thanks Barbara Klein, Tammy Lanier Weiner, Deborah Harrell Saville, and Robin Horton Homesley for representing our program. If you have photos to share, please send either snail mail to Support Services for Deaf/HH Students, Lenoir-Rhyne College Box 7221, Hickory, NC 28603 or email franks@lrc.edu.

ASL APPROVED AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE CREDIT

For the first time in LR’s history, ASL will count as foreign language credit for ALL students at Lenoir-Rhyne College. In April 2004 the faculty voted to have ASL count as foreign language credit.

LR HOSTS TELECONFERENCES

For the past five years, LR has served as host for 7 live teleconferences sponsored by PEPNet (Postsecondary Education Consortium) and CSUN (California State University, Northridge). Thanks to PEPNet for funding those teleconferences. If you would like information on our next teleconference email Shawn Frank at franks@lrc.edu. CEUs for RID Certification and for teaching renewal credit will be awarded and it’s FREE to attend.

A SIGN OF THE TIMES AT LENOIR-RHYNE COLLEGE

The Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program at Lenoir-Rhyne College is participating in a project for educational interpreters. Various staff at LR have created a mathematics CD and a science CD. The software is designed so a user can look up a word and then play a short video demonstrating the selected sign. Additionally, the software allows the user to build a custom dictionary to store the signs as desired. The CD is available for purchase through the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Support Services by contacting Shawn Frank, director, at (828) 328-7298.

SPECIAL GIFT

The Hamsher-Waltz Endowment Fund has been established in 2003 through a bequest from the estates of Ann and Elwood Hamsher for the purpose of providing perpetual support for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at LRC. Their granddaughter, Sally R. Waltz was a graduate of the Class of 1995 and enjoyed the support services offered at LRC for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The endowment fund shall be used to support scholarship assistance for a deaf or hard-of-hearing student or scholarship assistance for a Deaf Education major.
