The Human and Community Service
major provides graduates with knowledge, skills and
experiences to prepare them for working in the human
service professions. Students are educated to work
with individuals, individuals in small groups (such as
families) and individuals needing help in other groups
(work organizations, for example) and with community
organizations to accomplish more structural or
systemic (social, economic, political, recreational,
etc.) goals.
"Human
services worker" is a term for people who hold
professional and paraprofessional jobs in such diverse
settings as churches; group homes and halfway houses;
correctional, mental retardation, and community mental
health centers;
family, child, and youth service
agencies, and programs concerned with alcoholism, drug
abuse, family violence, and aging. Depending on the
employment setting and the kinds of clients served
there, job titles
and duties vary a great deal.
