Special Circumstances

Athletes: Students wishing to participate in a sport and to be in the athletic training program are limited to participation in one sport that has a season lasting one semester (Basketball season is considered to be one semester). Student athletes are encouraged but not required to:

  1. stay an additional year while not participating in a sport to complete the program

(or)

  1. not participate in their sport during their fourth year and complete the education program.

Transfers: Transfer students must meet all eligibility requirements for admission into the program. If the student has a athletic training background and meets all admission requirements, then they are deemed eligible for admission. If the student has no background in athletic training, then they will have to complete all requirements for admission prior to application.

If a student is a transfer athlete, then they will have to meet both sets of guidelines above for transfer students and athletes.

Double majors: A double major with teacher education requires students to stay an additional year to complete student teaching. Other double majors will require an extra year in order to focus solely on the athletic training program.

All special circumstances must be reviewed with the Program Director of Athletic Training early in the students' academic career to provide for adequate planning.

Program Progression

To maintain student status, all students must meet the following general requirements on a semester by semester basis:

  1. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 and major GPA of 2.85

  2. Receive no lower than a "C" in major courses

  3. Successfully complete all components for the current level

  4. Maintain "Average" to "High" rating on Progress Evaluations

Failure to achieve the above standards will results in a program warning. The warning will be issued to the student and placed in his/her personal file. If the student fails to meet the general requirements within a semester, he or she will be dismissed from the program. If a student is dismissed, he/she may appeal the decision to the Athletic Training Student Council for consideration. The Council will hear the case and make recommendations to the Program Staff. The Program Staff will consider the recommendations and consult with the Faculty of the School of Health Sciences. At this time, a final decision will be determined. If a student successfully appeals the case, then he/she will be readmitted to the program.
