Biography

Dr. Santo is an exercise physiologist and registered/licensed dietitian who joined the Division of Healthful Living and Sports Studies as an assistant professor in the fall of 2005. He is originally from New York , but has been fortunate enough to have also experienced living in the wild western states of Utah and Nevada . His graduate school endeavors were driven by his personal experiences with weight loss, physical conditioning and disease risk management during his senior year as an undergraduate student at Le Moyne College . Dr. Santo’s passion for teaching, his desire to extend the excitement of exercise and nutrition science to his students, and his commitment to academic excellence and achievement brought him to Lenoir-Rhyne College. He admits that the temperate climate and southern charm of North Carolina were also attractive incentives in his decision to reside in Hickory.

Dr. Santo’s career includes extensive experience with health clubs, personal training, corporate wellness, clinical practice, and academia. He has also conducted research under the auspices of Nabisco foods, Inc., The University of Nevada, Las Vegas and The State University of New York at Buffalo . His current research interests include exercise testing and assessment, soy protein, postprandial lipemia, and cardiovascular disease risk management.

Dr. Santo's commitment to health promotion extends far beyond the classroom setting. He can often be found weight training in the McCrorie Center or running around campus. Some of his other recreational activities include hiking and baseball.

Dr. Santo has an appreciation for the arts. When his is not exercising, he also can be found taking photographs, playing the piano or watching movies.

Dr. Santo resides in Hickory with his wonderful fiance, Ariana, and two cats, Romeo and Juliet.
