Another change in the Honors
Program! The faculty recently approved the creation of a new course: HON
301--Junior Honors Seminar. The main content of this course is for students to
complete their portfolio. It will meet only once or perhaps twice in the
semester. Even if you don't take this course, I will likely add you to it once
you satisfactorily complete your portfolio. Please register for this course if
you expect to graduate in either December 2008 or May 2009.
Upcoming Honors Classes! In
Fall 2008, the following honors classes will be offered: ENG 231--Writing about
Literature; MAT 115--Statistics; and REL 100H--The Christian Faith will be offered.
In Spring 2009, ENG 231H, PHI
116H--Ethics,
and ECO 383H--"History of Economic Thought in the 20th Century" (would
fulfill the Core Curriculum requirement for "institutional social
science")
In Fall 2009, ENG 231H, REL 400H and
at least one other course to be determined.
If you're interested in being a part
of the Student Honors Council which organizes activities for Honors students,
please contact Professor Ratke (the Honors Director).
Important Changes to the
Requirements for Graduating from the Honors Program!
1. In order to graduate
from the Honors Program you must have a GPA of 3.5. You may however continue to participate
in the Honors Program with a GPA below that. This policy change does not affect
current financial aid (honors award) policy.
2. The Great Books requirement for
Honors students has been reinstated to 4
courses. The final course (either HON 491 or HON 492) must be taken
in the final three semesters of your degree. This means that if you haven't
started taking Great Books, you need to start. This policy changes applies to
all honors students who began their studies at Lenoir-Rhyne College in August
2006 or later.
3. The policy on substituting Great
Books for a honors core class is now 1 course
more than what is required and must be requested in writing beforehand.
This means that if you want to substitute a Great Books course for a honors
class, you would need to do 5 GB courses in total (it's possible to take up GB
up to 8 times).
