MISSION
The Lenoir-Rhyne Honors Program fosters personal growth and
development of highly motivated students through exceptional
individual attention. Program students work with their intellectual
peers in an enhanced learning environment. The challenging ethos of
the Program prepares students for success in their post-graduate
experiences. The Honors Program cultivates responsible citizenship
through leadership opportunities on campus and the larger community.
REQUIREMENTS
Our goal is to ensure that all Honors students benefit from
the L-R Honors Program experience. Active learning and high standards
among a community of learners are at the core of the Honors
requirements. All Honors students must take an honors section of LRU 101, four Core courses offered as honors (e.g. ENG 231H, REL 100H), and
four Great Books courses (one hour each). Other requirements are doing community
service each year, and completing a First Year Reflective Essay
and then a Portfolio which is
due at the end of the junior year. Honors students must maintain a GPA of 3.25
to remain in the program and a GPA of 3.5 to graduate with honors. These requirements are designed to
provide an enhanced and exciting learning experience.
BENEFITS
In addition to our generous scholarships, Honors students
are enrolled in small classes with other highly motivated, creative
Honors students. These seminar-like classes are student-centered and
encourage individual and group learning through close interaction with
their professors. Honors Program professors are among the finest
teachers at the college.
Honors students have the opportunity to travel to
Europe during spring break as part of the Broyhill International
Honors Leadership Program. Participating Honors students receive free
airfare to Europe and special instruction in cultural interaction and
leadership skills.
In
2005, students went to London and Paris on a
Spring Break trip with a Da Vinci Code theme.
In
2006, students went on a tour of Germany with
Dr. Ratke.
In
2007, students toured London and Paris with
Professor Mauney.
Selected students receive scholarships to the Hickory
Humanities Forum, which is a Great Books seminar that meets in the
Spring at the beautiful Wildacres Conference Center in the NC
mountains.
OTHER BENEFITS
The Honors Program Director serves as a second advisor
to all freshman and sophomore Honors students. The second advisor
helps to ensure that new students have the support they need.
The Honors Program offers social, recreational, and
cultural activities as part of the L-R Honors experience. Honors
students attend receptions at the home of the College President, take
day hikes in the mountains, attend plays, and talk to world famous
writers and scholars in intimate classroom settings throughout the
academic year.
Honors students have the opportunity to develop their
leadership skills by serving on the Student Honors Council and other
Honors committees. The Council participates in regional and national
conferences of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
Each
Spring, the Honors Program hosts an Honors
Thesis competition. Honors and cash prizes
are awarded to the winners.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Honors Program offers
incoming freshmen the opportunity to compete for Cromer
Scholarships, which cover full tuition and is valued at over $75,000
for four years. In addition, the College offers Lineberger
Scholarships, which cover three-quarter tuition over four years and
is valued at about $57,000. In all, thirty scholarships are
available and students are invited to Honors Day based on academic

attend Honors Day to be considered for the Presidential, Cromer and Lineberger awards.
