When I Suffer Bereavement

When a family member or dear one dies, your employment will be affected. The University has a tradition of working with faculty and staff through difficult personal times. In accordance with federal legislation it is necessary to formalize leaves for all reasons, including bereavement. Clear communication with your supervisor or department chairman and the human resources office is the key to an effective leave and return to work.

Absence due to illness or death of family members is to be charged to sick leave. If sick leave is exhausted, vacation leave is to be used next. If both sick leave and vacation leave are exhausted, time without pay is an option. Refer to "Time Away From Work" for more information. Your faculty or staff handbook contains details.
