I. INTRODUCTION

Welcome to your new employment with Lenoir-Rhyne University. We are glad to have you as a member of our staff and trust that you will enjoy your association with us.

Because you serve on the staff of Lenoir-Rhyne University, it is to your advantage to acquaint yourself with some of the facts about the organization with which you work – its employment practices, your various benefits, as well as your responsibilities as a Lenoir-Rhyne employee. You may also be interested to know something about its purpose, history and administrative organization.
Please take the time to examine the contents of this book thoroughly. Also, you should keep it in a convenient location, should you need to refer to it away from your work location.

I A. Mission. Lenoir-Rhyne University is an institution of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) providing programs of undergraduate and graduate study offering the liberal arts as a basis for varied careers with guidance for an intelligence-directed and purposeful life. As a community of learning founded to engage liberal culture and Christian principles, Lenoir-Rhyne is dedicated to the ongoing task of evaluating and relating the varying insights of the arts and sciences from many perspectives in the conviction God and the world are best discerned from within the perspective of Christian faith.

In pursuit of the development of the whole person, Lenoir-Rhyne University seeks to liberate mind and spirit, clarify personal faith, foster physical wholeness, build a sense of community, and promote responsible leadership for service in the world.

As an institution of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the University holds the conviction that wholeness of personality, true vocation, and the most useful service to God and the world are best discerned from the perspective of Christian faith.

As a community of learning, the University provides programs of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing study committed to the liberal arts and sciences as a foundation for a wide variety of careers and as guidance for a meaningful life.

I B. Employee Expectations. As a Lenoir-Rhyne employee, you are expected to support the purpose and objectives of the college. Your own unique contribution toward accomplishment of our Christ-centered mission will be significant as we serve the students in our midst. Each staff member is a role model for our students; even those who have only infrequent contact with them have opportunities to influence their attitudes, ambitions and behavior. If your own religious beliefs create a conflict with your responsibility in carrying out these stated purposes and objectives of the college you should make the administration aware of this before accepting employment.

I C. Nature of this Booklet. You are expected to familiarize yourself with the contents of this booklet. Not a detailed policy statement, it provides only general information concerning Lenoir-Rhyne’s policies; the college reserves the right to change these at any time. Should you have questions about anything that follows please discuss them with your supervisor. Additionally, feel free to discuss them with the Human Resource Director in the Lineberger Administration Building, Room 211. An individual supervisor’s verbal or written commitment is valid only as it is in accordance with established college policy and practice.
