Concentrations Within the Mathematics Major and the Minor in Mathematics
General
Track
The Bachelor
of Arts in Mathematics (General Track) is designed for the student preparing
for a career in a field which requires a mathematics component. This
track offers a great deal of flexibility; the student and adviser can
plan an appropriate sequence of courses to fit the student's interests
and career goals, such as applied mathematics, statistics, etc. Laboratory
science and computer science preparation help tie the mathematics to
applications.
Theoretical
Track
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Theoretical Track) is designed
for the student interested in doing research in mathematics. It is also
a strong preparation for graduate studies. The program is structured
to develop mathematical thinking and proof writing skills.
Teacher
Certification
The Bachelor of Arts
in Mathematics (Education Track) is designed for the student seeking
a career in education at the secondary level, or interested in graduate
school as a Mathematics Education student. Students receive a strong
mathematical background, as well as background in educational theory.
Students gain experience through internships with public schools and
tutoring on campus.
Minors
The
Program offers options for additional study for all students, regardless
of their major field of study. A strong background in mathematics combined
with a concentration in another field allows students to make connections
between fields that can lead to new opportunities for satisfying careers.
Students who wish to minor in mathematics must take twenty (20)
credits consisting of MAT 165, 166, 280 and nine (9) credits of courses
numbered 200 or above (see the Lenoir-Rhyne General Catalog for details).
A minor in Actuarial Science is also offered.

The
following courses are the most commonly taken to meet the core requirement for mathematics:
MAT 115 MAT 120 MAT 125
MAT 129 MAT 165 MAT 215
The course you
select to take depends upon your major. Please discuss this with
your advisor, and plan carefully! (Note: MAT 115 was
previously numbered MAT 130.)
