Majors
Lenoir-Rhyne offers a wide range of modern language courses that enhance a student's appreciation and understanding of three important world cultures: French, German, and Spanish. Modern language classes are small and personal, taught in the target language by experienced professors (all holding Ph.D.'s) who maintain a vigorous commitment to teaching courses focused on spoken and written language skills, culture, civilization, literature, methodology, and international business. Each semester, the Department employs 15-20 students to conduct daily 50-minute drill sessions in introductory and intermediate French, German and Spanish under the supervision of a professor. The International Business major, with heavy concentrations in French or German or Spanish, is one of our most popular offerings, with some 30-45 majors.

Classical Languages
The classical language program provides a meaningful combination of courses for a student choosing an inter-school major in Classics. A cooperative program with the Education Program has been established for those desiring a teaching certificate in Latin.

Modern Languages
The modern language programs in French, Spanish, and German are designed to provide students with appropriate linguistic skills to develop a knowledge and sympathetic understanding of cultural differences. The programs are also flexible enough to accommodate students seeking a degree in a modern language with or without teacher certification, a degree in International Business, a double major, or simply a minor in modern language.

Dartmouth Model Method
In 1976 we were awarded a special grant by the Exxon Education Foundation to implement the highly successful Dartmouth Intensive Language Model in several introductory and intermediate French courses in 1977-78. Lenoir-Rhyne University was one of the first six colleges and universities throughout the United States to be so honored. As a result of the successful experimental French classes, all 110-111 and 210 courses in French, Spanish, and German are taught in the Dartmouth Model method. The classes are designed to "submerge" the class in the language in order for the students to speak the language in class as much as possible.
