Statement of Mission

The Music Program of Lenoir-Rhyne College guides students in the development of the artistic, aesthetic, analytical, technical, and pedagogical skills necessary to serve society as effective music educators, church musicians, professional performers, life-long participants, and informed consumers of the musical arts.

The Music Program also strives to serve Lenoir-Rhyne College, the church, and the Hickory community by providing visible, high-quality, and aesthetically appropriate performances in various settings and in various genres.

Goals

  • To provide a music education program of excellence and rigor which meets or exceeds all certification standards for NCATE and NCDPI.

  • To provide a sacred music program of excellence and rigor which prepares students to serve the church as music professionals.

  • To provide a music performance program of excellence and rigor which prepares students to enter major graduate programs in music performance.

  • To provide a liberal arts program in music which both develops individual performance skills and a refined, articulate, and informed appreciation of the musical arts.

  • To provide active choral and instrumental ensembles of excellence which bring positive recognition to the college and to the department and which provide students with opportunities for high level ensemble participation.

  • To recruit and retain a music student body of high performance ability and academic accomplishment.

  • To serve Christ’s church universal and within it the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America through the performance of sacred music and the presenting of seminars addressing current issues of concern to the church community.
