Objectives
Western Piedmont Youth Symphony is open to students by audition.
The orchestra rehearses once each week on Monday evenings, plus dress
rehearsals prior to each concert. Western Piedmont Youth Symphony is
managed and operated by the Western Piedmont Symphony.
General Methodology
Youth Symphony is a performance ensemble and therefore relies
primarily upon full ensemble rehearsals to prepare for performances.
Additionally, students are expected to prepare their own parts
individually, apart from rehearsals.
Special Requirements—Concert Dress
Concert dress will be specified by the conductor.
Textbooks and Other Required Materials
The Youth Symphony will provide all music necessary. Students are
expected to provide a high quality, working instrument. Some instruments
are available for loan; contact the professor to inquire about college
instruments.
Course Outline
A complete list of rehearsals and performances will be provided by
the instructor at the beginning of each semester.
Method of Evaluation
Students are evaluated based on their attendance, preparation for
rehearsal, and attitude. Students are expected at all rehearsals and
performances.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is strictly required at all rehearsals. Students who must
miss a rehearsal due to serious illness or family emergency should
contact the instructor prior to the rehearsal. Work, campus clubs, and
fraternity or sorority functions are not excusable. A student’s course
grade will be lowered for each unexcused absence. Attendance is likewise
required at the performance. Students missing the performance will
receive a failing grade in the course.
