SYLLABUS

Catalog description: A lab course focusing on the various elements of service playing: hymn and anthem accompaniments, conducting from the keyboard, liturgical playing, modulations and reharmonizations, and registration.

Required texts: oLet the People Sing! (David Cherwien), Concordia Publishing House, 1997 © Lutheran Book of Worship Accompaniment Edition to both Hymns and Services Augsburg Publishing House, 1978

Expectations of the course: Students will be challenged to improve their skills in the playing of hymns and liturgy, anthem accompaniments, directing from the console, improvisation, and modulation. In addition, students will expand their knowledge of the history and design of the organ, and discover resources to aid in the playing of a liturgical service on the organ.

Evaluation: 60% - average of weekly class participation grades 15% - midterm written test based on reading 25% - final playing exam

Final Exam: Monday, December 12th, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
