Course Description:
A survey of the hymnody of the Western Church, from its historical roots in
Hebrew and Greek hymns to the present. The course will include a study of
Gregorian chant, Reformation hymns, Genevan and English Psalters, Evangelical
and Anglican hymns, early American and Gospel hymns, African-American spirituals
and contemporary hymnody and will include some instruction on the writing of
hymn texts and tunes.
Evaluation:
~ Weekly hymn-tune quizzes and other homework - 20%
~ Midterm - 25%
~ Class presentations on contemporary hymn writers - 10%
~ Paper - 20%
This will be a six to eight page typed paper on a hymn writer, a
historical period of hymnody, a theological discussion of a particular
hymn or group of hymns, or some other approved topic. A typed one
page paper showing preliminary research and proposing your topic
is due for approval on 1/30. A rough draft is due 3/1. The final
paper is due 3/20. Use MLA format, and cite at least six sources,
no more than one internet source.
IN CLASS HONORS: To earn honors for this class, a student
will write either a 15-20 page paper (following the dates listed
above), or will write two shorter papers on different topics.
~ Final Exam (Tuesday, May 8th, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.) - 25%
The final exam will be cumulative, but will deal especially
with topics covered since the midterm. 25% of the final exam
grade will be a hymn that you write (text and tune, at least three
stanzas). The first draft of the text will be due to Dr. Weber
on 3/28, and the first draft of the tune due to him on 4/11.
The completed hymn will be turned in on 4/27 to be graded
and copied in preparation for singing at the last class period.
Dr. Weber will give further guidelines for this project.
Expectations of the Course:
You are expected to attend all classes. Failure to attend class will affect your
grade by lowering it one half letter grade for each absence after the first one.
In addition, you will receive a zero for the weekly hymn tune quiz if you miss
it. A doctor's excuse will be needed to excuse an absence due to illness. In
addition, in order to pass the class, you must complete the class presentation,
the paper, and the writing of the hymn.
