Objectives
Concert Band is Lenoir-Rhyne College’s
premier instrumental ensemble. The band rehearses once each week on
Tuesday evenings, plus a dress rehearsal prior to each concert. The
Concert Band rehearses and performs large band literature of a variety
of styles and historical periods.
General Methodology
Concert Band is a performance ensemble and
therefore relies primarily upon full ensemble rehearsals to prepare for
performances. Students are expected to prepare their own
parts individually, apart from rehearsals, and to prepare "pass
off" exams periodically as announced in class.
There will be "pass off" exams
as follows. The exams will be evaluated for accuracy, intonation,
musical expression and style.
-
February
11-15 - List
"A" as announced in class.
-
March 24-28 -
List
"B" as announced in class.
-
April 7-11 -
List
"C" as announced in class.
Special Requirements—Concert Dress
Men:
Black Tuxedo and cummerbund, Black shoes and socks, black bow tie, white
tux shirt.
Women: Long (floor length) black dress with long sleeves. The
back should be completely covered. Formal black slacks with a long
sleeve black top is also appropriate.
Fragrance: Colognes and perfumes are not appropriate for
concerts.
Textbooks and Other Required Materials
The Concert Band will provide all music
necessary. Students are expected to provide the following:
-
High quality, working
instrument - Some instruments are available for loan; contact the
instructor to inquire about college instruments.
-
Metronome - Inexpensive, credit
card style metronomes are available through many vendors.
-
Electronic tuner - Smart Music®
has an excellent tuner module built into the program. Regular and
extensive access to a tuner is acceptable.
-
Mutes
- Students are expected to have or check
out (when possible) the mutes designated in the repertoire for the
semester.
Course Outline
A complete list of rehearsals and performances
will be posted on the Concert Band web site at the beginning of the
semester.
Method of Evaluation
Students are evaluated based on their
attendance, preparation for rehearsal, and attitude. Students are
expected at all rehearsals and performances.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is required at all rehearsals and
the semester concert. Students who must miss a rehearsal due to serious illness or
family emergency should contact the instructor prior to the rehearsal.
Work, campus clubs, and fraternity or sorority functions are not
excusable.
Unexcused absences will affect the course grade. Being
late for rehearsal twice will affect the course grade. Dress
rehearsals are required and may be extended to 10:00 or shortly
thereafter, and attendance for the entire rehearsal is expected. Contact
the instructor if you need an excuse for other evening courses.
Students
missing the performance will receive a failing grade in the course.
Rehearsal Requirements & Expectations
-
Arrive in the rehearsal room at least 10 minutes prior to
rehearsal
-
Have all materials (reeds, music, mutes, accessories) prior to
rehearsal time
-
Maintain your instrument in a fully-functional condition
-
Prepare (practice) your part fully prior to rehearsal. The purpose
of rehearsal is to put all of the parts together; it is not for
members to practice their own parts.
Permission to Record
On occasion, the Lenoir-Rhyne College Concert
Band produces recordings that are available for general distribution. As
this is a normal function of the Concert Band, students who participate
automatically give their consent to have their performance included on
recordings released by Lenoir-Rhyne College.
Teacher Licensure Indicators Addressed

rehearsal and with an example of how a conductor/teacher quickly
assesses performance and provides instruction for improvement. It will
also provide students with an exposure to the finest in concert band
literature.
