FIELD
WORK, MUS 470.01 (1 Credit Hour) Advisor:
The Rev. Dr. Paul Weber CATALOG
DESCRIPTION An
experiential component of the sacred music program.
The sacred music student will participate in a church music
program for a minimum of three hours per week for a full semester.
A student will be placed under staff supervision in a local
church setting. Students
already employed as parish musicians may fulfill field work requirements
at their place of employment. PREREQUISITES:
At least two semesters of
the sacred music sequence. EXPECTATIONS
OF THE STUDENT In
the course of a semester of field work, the student will:
1) In so far as is
possible and practical, prepare and conduct each of the congregation’s
ensembles in at
least one musical selection.
2) Plan with church
staff and/or faculty adviser for the placement within worship of these
selections.
3) Contribute
his/her particular musical gifts to the congregation’s worship.
4) Attend at least
one meeting of the staff and of the worship and music committee.
5) Use the resident
staff members as resource people, inquire about their position(s) and
learn from their
experiences. EXPECTATIONS
OF THE CHURCH STAFF The
church staff, in turn, should:
1) Announce to the
congregation that the student is engaged in a semester of supervised
field work.
2) Support and
encourage the student in every way possible, integrating him/her into
the fullness
of the music and worship life of the parish.
3) Make every effort
to give the student an experience of leadership within each of the
congregation’s
musical ensembles.
4) Engage the
student, when possible, in service planning.
5) Invite the
student to offer his/her unique musical gifts.
6) Welcome the
student to at least one meeting of the staff and of the worship and
music committee. In
addition, any attempt to broaden the student’s knowledge of the
spiritual, social, economic and political factors that influence
music-making in the church will be viewed as a positive gain for the
student. It is the hope
that this internship will deepen the congregation’s appreciation for
the ministry of the church musician and for the vital role of sacred
music in the life of the church. EVALUATION
Observation of the student’s participation and leadership in rehearsals and worship will be made by the faculty advisor and church staff. During the semester the student will meet several times with the faculty advisor to engage in and reflect on service planning. At the conclusion of the semester and prior to a final meeting, the student will submit to the faculty advisor a three-page typed report summarizing the field work experience. The student will assess this internship in conversation with the faculty advisor, and, if possible, with the church staff.
