SYLLABUS MUS
471.01 SACRED MUSIC PROJECT Prerequisite:
At least three semesters of the sacred music sequence. Catalog
Description:
A
summation project for the sacred music student. The student will plan,
prepare and lead a public worship service on or off campus. Involvement
may include the performance or direction of choral and/or instrumental
music and the necessary liturgical propers. One credit. (On demand) Process:
After an initial meeting with the professor, students will plan
and implement their projects on an individual basis with the instructor
being available for consultation on Monday evenings.
The class will, at the discretion of the professor, reconvene to
share details of projects with other students and/or to help students
prepare their projects. Objectives: 1.
The student will make the necessary arrangements to hold a
service on or off campus. 2.
The student will use appropriate worship resources to plan a
service of at least one half
hour in length. 3.
The student will integrate the service into the church year using
the revised common lectionary. 4.
The student will select a theme for the service. 5.
The major/concentration/general studies student will choose,
secure and prepare the music of
the service.
The sacred music minor may give musical leadership to the
service. 6.
The major/concentration/general studies student will prepare
written or verbal notes on the
service and the theme selected.
The sacred music minor will prepare for presentation a ten minute
homily on the theme
selected, or, if giving musical leadership to the service,
prepare written or verbal notes. 7.
The student will select, engage in team-planning with, and train
other worship leaders
involved in the service. 8.
The student will advertise the service to the constituency for
which it is intended. 9.
The student will prepare copy for the service. Record:
In order to prepare a record of this project, the student must
have the service videotaped and recorded.
Upon request, this record will be submitted to the professor for
further evaluation or for review by the class. Materials:
Materials necessary for the successful completion of this project
off campus may be purchased through individual congregations.
If the service is held on campus, materials may be purchased
through the sacred music program. Grading:
Successful completion of all of the above objectives will result
in a grade of A.
