A
Cappella Choir
The A Cappella Choir was
established in 1935 by Professor Kenneth B. Lee, who was a graduate of St.Olaf
College
and an alumnus of the famed St.Olaf Choir.
Professor Emeritus E. Ray McNeely conducted the choir from 1971-1999
and continued the a cappella tradition while also including choral
repertoire with instrumental accompaniment.
His last performance with the choir occurred in the Cathedral of
Notre-Dame, Paris, in May 1999.
Dr.
Paul Weber
serves as only the third director of the ensemble in its seventy-year
history. The choir has given
more than 880 concerts in twenty-two states and has made seven European
tours, last appearing in concert throughout
Germany
in the spring of 2003. In March
2005 the choir performed Handel’s complete Messiah with the Western
Piedmont Symphony under the direction of
John Gordon Ross
at
First
Baptist
Church, Hickory.
In past years, the choir has
been invited to perform in New York’s Riverside
Church and in Rockefeller Chapel, Chicago, for the installation services of two presiding bishops of the Lutheran
church, and it also sang for the 200th Anniversary Service of the North
Carolina Synod (ELCA) in November 2004 at Wake
Forest
University
. Recordings of the choir
include the two-compact disc release, “O Day Full of Grace.”
The choir is planning a trip to Estonia
in 2007.
