Concert Band
Performing formal concerts each
semester, the Concert Band is the centerpiece of the instrumental program. The band
performs large band literature from all periods and styles appropriate to the concert band
setting.
Founded
in 1918, the Concert Band has enjoyed a long tradition of
excellence. Our fifth and current Director of Bands, Dr.
Daniel Kiser, was appointed in 1992. He is a summa
cum laude graduate of Southern Illinois University and holds graduate
degrees from Southern Illinois and the
University of Illinois. Prior to his appointment at Lenoir-Rhyne, Dr. Kiser
was a member of the music faculty of North Dakota State University.
Among its many accomplishments, the Concert Band is
particularly honored to have participated in the Meet The Composer New Residencies
program which provides large grants to participating organizations to bring a
professional composer to a community for a period of three years. In collaboration with
the Western Piedmont Symphony (John Gordon Ross, Music Director and Conductor), the
Hickory Museum of Art, and the Hickory Public Library, the Lenoir-Rhyne
University Music
Program has helped to sponsor Dr. J. Mark Scearce as Composer In Residence to the Hickory
area.
The Concert Band has had the honor of premiering two of Dr.
Scearce's works and premiering a band transcription (transcribed by Dr. Daniel Kiser) of
an earlier Scearce composition.
