Woodwind Class

Course Description

Music 323 is to provide for teaching purposes at middle school or high school level a working knowledge of the woodwind family. The student will develop skills which will allow for performing at a second year level on flute, clarinet, saxophone and either oboe or bassoon. The student will also develop a file of pedagogy information pertinent to teaching and performing on each instrument.

Attendance

Because Music 213 is a course which depends on laboratory development of skills, attendance is essential. Two excused absences within the semester will be permitted, but any other absences will negatively impact the final grade.

Exams

The student will take a written exam and playing exam on each instrument studied. Daily quizzes may be expected.

NORTH CAROLINA COMPETENCIES

  • 1.2  A knowledge of music literature suitable for various age levels and the ability to select music appropriate for the ensemble and/or individual student.
  • 1.3 A knowledge of basic music vocabulary/terminology essential to the teaching of music in the schools, K-12.
  • 2.2  Major solo performance capability in at least one medium, as well as minor performance capability.
  • 3.3  The ability to perform simple instrument repairs.
  • 4.3  Sufficient techniques to demonstrate and teach representative musical instruments at beginning levels of proficiency. Students electing additional preparation in instrumental music should be able to demonstrate and teach each of the instruments.
  • 4.7  A working knowledge of music texts and other source materials at all levels.
  • 4.12 A working knowledge of diverse approaches to student instruction at differing age and ability levels.
  • 5.6 The ability to communicate appropriately, both verbally and in writing.
