Syllabus, Advanced Form and Analytical Technique, MUS 302 (2 credits)

Dr. John Cheek, ext. 7152, office #102

Basic Information: Advanced Form and Analytical Technique examines the formal approaches composers take to music composition.

Objectives of the Course: By studying the ways composers handle the various forms, students gain insight into their individual style and develop a deeper esthetic appreciation of their works. Students expand knowledge of the analytical techniques learned in the theory sequence by analyzing and writing exercises in the style of various composers. Students learn basic forms of western art music from the Baroque to the present. The relationship between motive, phrase and larger structure and overall apprehension of compositional unity is attained.

Teaching Methodology: Class meets twice a week (50 minutes each). Each class is a given over to analysis of composers’ works, followed by discussion. Regular assignments will by given and each student will be expected to present their analyses and original work in class. Reading assignments will also be given and materials placed on reserve in the music library in the Mauney music building.

Evaluation: Homework assignments (to be kept in a portfolio) count for 75% of student’s grades. 25% is added additionally for a final analysis project.
