270 - WORSHIP (3
Credit Hours) CATALOG
DESCRIPTION: A
study of the theology and practice of Christian worship, beginning
with its Jewish roots. Emphasis
will be given to the historic development of liturgy, including a
comparison of current orders of worship.
Other topics to be covered are:
the church year, worship planning, musical settings of the
liturgy, worship space and acoustics, and a theological framework for
the use of music in worship. Three
hours. (Fall ‘98) PURPOSE:
MUS 270 is a foundational course for the sacred music sequence.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES: At the
completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1) define
Christian worship, its biblical roots and essential characteristics.
2) describe the
role of music in worship.
3) compare and
contrast:
Jewish and early Christian worship
western and eastern liturgies
current denominational worship forms
4) trace
Reformation influences on modern worship practices.
5) describe the
sanctification of time, space and life.
6) articulate the
historic role of the organ in worship.
7) more
intelligently engage in worship planning.
8) define the role
of choir, congregation, instrumentalist and soloist in worship.
9)
better understand the worship tradition out of which he/she was
nurtured and the diversity of

Students are to be in class except for grave illness or
emergency. Class
participation and discussion are essential so that a variety of
viewpoints may be heard. ASSIGNMENTS:
Students are to complete reading and written assignments in a
timely fashion. EVALUATION:
Evaluation will be made on the basis of reflection papers,
quizzes, class participation, midterm and final exams.
Take-home exams and reflection papers must be typed and double
spaced. GRADING:
The semester grade will be calculated in this manner:
