Lenoir-Rhyne and Century Furniture to present forum on ethical business leadership
Dr. Evan Offstein, a West Point graduate and author of “Stand Your Ground: Building Honorable Leaders the West Point Way,” will speak at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at Lenoir-Rhyne College’s Belk Centrum, located at 628 7th Ave. Place, NE in Hickory.
Offstein’s appearance, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Lenoir-Rhyne and Century Furniture. Offstein is a business management professor at Frostburg State University. He has also managed and led at profit and non-profit organizations, including Corning, Target Corp. and the Virginia Military Institute.
His book is a response to recent leadership breakdowns at places such as Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia and Abu Ghraib. Offstein approached leaders at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the Department of the Army with two primary questions: 1) How does West Point develop its leaders? and 2) Can other individuals and organizations apply these methods effectively?
Two years later, after conducting extensive on-site research at West Point and with business leaders in a variety of industries, he offers unprecedented access to the process of leadership at West Point, and practical insights that can be applied to any type of organization that strives to operate on the principle of integrity.
After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Offstein earned a master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. His research on senior executives has won recognition and awards at top international conferences, including the Academy of Management Conference, the Strategic Management Society Conference and the American Society for Competitiveness Conference. He has also published the results of his research in scholarly journals and contributed cases and book chapters to several books on leadership.
He is a frequent speaker on leadership issues. Offstein’s speech at Lenoir-Rhyne College will be of interest to anyone interested in business and professional leadership issues.
