Becky J. Townsend of Raleigh was recently named academic coordinator of the Thomas W. Reese Institute for Conservation of Natural Resources.

Townsend received her bachelor's in environmental science from North Carolina State University in 2000, graduating summa cum laude. She earned her master's from N.C. State in natural resource policy and administration in 2005.

Since 2000, she has served as program coordinator for the Forestry and Environmental Outreach Program at N.C. State. There she implemented continuing education programs designed for students, professionals, researchers, landowners and the general public.

Originally from Burke County, she previously worked as in intern for South Mountains State Park in Connelly Springs. Her work included doing flora and fauna surveys. She also worked as a summer reading program intern for the Elbert Ivey Memorial Library in Hickory.

Townsend has been involved in a number of community service projects in the Raleigh area, including the North Carolina Big Sweep, Partners for Environmental Justice, ReCreate State and Cherish the Earth. She has also volunteered numerous hours with Catawba Memorial Hospital.

The Reese Institute for Conservation of Natural Resources offers an interdisciplinary major for undergraduates designed to promote student understanding of conservation and environmental issues, and to prepare students to help manage the world's renewable natural resources.
