Puddingstone to perform at Lenoir-Rhyne

Arts Aloud at Lenoir-Rhyne College will present A Puddingstone Christmas at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium, located at 775 6th St. NE, Hickory.

Puddingstone is a local group of musicians offering a unique blend of traditional and modern musical styles. The group performs on everything from antique folk instruments to contemporary synthesizers. Puddingstone’s Christmas concert celebrates different customs, melodies and cultures. The concert is suitable for the entire family.
Puddingstone consists of six local musicians with different backgrounds.

Dr. David Abernethy is the founder and producer of Puddingstone. He received his music training as a percussionist with the award-winning Lenoir High School Band. He studied science at Elon College but simultaneously held a full music scholarship. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Elon and a medical degree at Bowman Grey School of Medicine. He plays the hammered dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy, penny whistle, gemshorn, krumhorn, recorder, racket, electronic wind-controller and many other instruments. When not performing, he practices medicine in Lenoir.

Suzanne Williams started playing flute at age 12 in her school’s band. She studied music at Stetson University, where she was a student of Geoffrey Gilbert. In 1989, she moved to Hickory with her husband and children. She has taught with the Suzuki School of the Arts for 16 years and is now co-director of the school. She also performs with Silver Lining, a professional flute duo, and has performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony.

Alice Barlowe began singing in her church choir and the South Caldwell High School choir. She has a bachelor’s degree in piano performance and education from Appalachian State University. She has performed professionally at dinner theaters and night clubs.
Paul Holt has been playing guitar since age 15. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in guitar from ASU. He teaches at the Suzuki School of the Arts in Hickory. He also plays electric guitar in church with a praise and worship band.

Denise Baxter-Yoder began singing in church choirs. She holds a degree in music from Montevallo University, Ala, and a master’s degree in education from ASU. She teaches in the Catawba County schools and has performed in musical theater.

Mike Willis began his musical career as a percussionist with the Lenoir High School Band. He studied music at Brevard and ASU. He has extensive professional playing experience in several cities.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for children age 6-12 and senior citizens, and free for children 5 and younger. Advance group rates (for 10 or more) are $5 each.

Advance tickets may be ordered online at https://www.lrc.edu/businessoffice/artsaloud.asp   They will also be available at the L-R Box Office at P.E. Monroe beginning Nov. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
