PLAYMAKERS TO PRESENT "THE TEMPEST"
The Playmakers of Lenoir-Rhyne College will present William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” for six nights beginning Nov. 9. All performances are free to the public and will be held in the Belk Centrum on campus.
Performances dates are Nov. 9, 13 and 14 at 7 p.m., Nov. 10-11 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.
One of Shakespeare’s best known plays, “The Tempest” tells the story of Prospero, a sorcerer and the rightful Duke of Milan, and his daughter, Miranda. Twelve years before the beginning of the play, the duke's brother Antonio and Alonso conspired to usurp Prospero’s throne. Prospero and Miranda were set adrift in a boat.
They eventually found themselves marooned on an enchanted island, where Prospero is served by Ariel, a spirit whom he freed from a tree with magic, and Caliban. When magic reveals that a ship bearing his old enemies is sailing near the island, Prospero summons a storm to wreck their ship. The survivors make it to shore in scattered groups and are lured to Prospero's abode by the singing of Ariel.
