Lenoir-Rhyne College to present concert by Estonian choir

The Lenoir-Rhyne College Friends of Music will present Heinavanker, a vocal ensemble from Estonia, in concert at 8 p.m. Sept. 29 at Corinth Reformed United Church of Christ.

Heinvanker

The church is located at 150 Sixth Ave. NW in Hickory. The concert is free and open to the public.

The country of Estonia has a great choral tradition, and Heinavanker is one of their newest representatives. This ensemble will alternate a cappella selections of the early Renaissance composer, Johannes Ockeghem, with early Lutheran Estonian folk hymns.

According to the group’s website, the name Heinavanker means “haywagon” and refers to a religious painting by Hieronymous Bosch (1453-1516). Called the Haywagon Tryptich, this altarpiece shows a large haywagon rolling toward hell. Around the base of the wagon, humanity is engaged in various sinful practices. The sinners seem oblivious to their fate, as the wagon rolls toward destruction. However, on top of the wagon are figures that are singing and worshiping God. The Heinavanker Web site asks if the evil world below is truly oblivious to the singing from above.

Established in 2002, the Friends of Music promotes and enhances the musical arts at Lenoir-Rhyne College through its support of the Concert Series and special projects related to the music program. Through the Concert Series, the Friends of Music brings guest artists and scholars to the Lenoir-Rhyne community for performances, lectures and presentations.

The special project support provided by the Friends of Music enables Lenoir-Rhyne to offer artistic, scholarly, and musically engaging opportunities to students involved in the study and performance of music.

This coming May 14-28 the college’s A Cappella Choir will take its 9th tour abroad. Countries to be visited include Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as well as Helsinki, Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia.
