Nursing Academic Program

The Division of Nursing was established in partnership with Grace Hospital in nearby Morganton, N.C. The Grace Hospital Diploma Program was founded in 1910, and at its closing in 1963 had graduated 356 nurses. The Lenoir-Rhyne Grace Hospital School of Nursing began in 1960 and graduated its first class of nine students in 1964. To date 945 students have graduated from the Lenoir-Rhyne Department of Nursing, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing.

The Program was accredited by the National League of Nursing in April, 1969, and since that time has maintained continuous accreditation status. In 2005 the faculty voted to change accrediting agencies and sought accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing.  As of October, 2005, the program has been fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing (CCNE).  by The Lenoir-Rhyne program was the fourth in the state of North Carolina to gain accreditation and the first fully accredited church-related program.  The program also has full approval from the North Carolina State Board of Nursing.

Achievements
Students in the department have been recognized for their scholarship through membership in Mu Sigma Epsilon, Sigma Theta Tau, the nursing department honors program and Alpha Lambda Delta, as well as being listed in Who's Who Among American University Students. In addition, many have received Lenoir-Rhyne's Lineberger Presidential as well as  Nurse Merit Scholarships.

Regular student community service initiatives include fundraising activities for an AIDS support group, flu vaccinations for local elderly citizens, faculty/staff health screenings on campus and the planning and implementation of numerous health promotion programs.

Department faculty serve as officers and representatives for local and state professional organizations. Most of the faculty maintain current practice in the clinical area. They regularly present papers and research at local, state and national conferences.

Curriculum Overview
The Lenoir-Rhyne nursing curriculum is based on the Caring theoretical perspective. Teaching methodologies and student learning activities have been revised to reflect this perspective. Lenoir-Rhyne nursing students benefit from both the applied sciences and a core curriculum based in the liberal arts.  Students are accepted into nursing as juniors. Qualified transfer students can enter the program at the sophomore level.  The graduate has both critical thinking and hands-on skills and is prepared to practice in direct patient care.  The graduate is also prepared to pursue graduate study in nursing and to continue education in emerging nursing fields.
