From a practical standpoint, my philosophy degree prepared me for law school.  I was already used to a lot of reading and analytical writing.  It helped with issue spotting and formulating cohesive arguments.  It improved my vocabulary considerably.

Those were all secondary benefits.  Philosophy helps with perspective  Not as much Heidegger's "we-find-ourselves-thrown-into-existence" kind of perspective, but more to keep from being digitized in a world where people are increasingly seen as mere consumers, things... bytes.

The humanities are about living, not just making one.
