Philosophy is a major for all seasons. If some subjects teach you how to do, philosophy teaches you how to be. That is, it addresses life's fundamental questions: what is the world? what is real? who am I? what can I know? what's good? These questions pervade all walks of life and inform all our doing, whether we work with our hands or with ideas, whether we lead or we follow.

Studying philosophy is an awakening to consciousness. I came to realize that I needed to ask these questions not merely to be informed, but to become wise: fully alive to the opportunities and challenges in each moment, each season, of my life.
