In
North Carolina, as in every
state, we face many serious
environmental challenges.
Loss
of farmland, trees and open
space. Polluted runoff
into streams, rivers, and
sounds. Well water
pollution. Wetlands
loss. Worsening air
quality.
The Reese Institute is
working to address real
issues such as these,
combining responsible
economic development and
social interests with
conservation, by
participating in numerous
community initiatives.
Currently we are involved
with groups working on these
issues:
1. Air
quality. Catawba
County is currently not in
compliance with EPA
standards for fine particle
air pollution. The
Reese Institute has joined
with local, state, and
federal government agencies
as well as local businesses
to help identify the causes
of this pollution and
determine possible
solutions.
2. Lake
Hickory. The balance
between recreational uses,
industrial uses, and water
quality is crucial for the
sustainability of Lake
Hickory. The Reese
Institute is working with
others in the community to
help achieve this
conservation balance. |
"I
am pleased that The Reese
Institute at Lenoir-Rhyne
University recognizes that
stewardship and conservation
of our natural resources are
collaborative processes
involving many stakeholders.
Western North Carolina will
benefit from the new
emphasis placed on regional
environmental issues by
students, community leaders
and business leaders.
Our children and
grandchildren will realize
the dividends from the
investment made by the Reese
Institute and Lenoir-Rhyne.”
