Student Essay Competitions, Prizes, Conferences

This page consists of two parts.  

Part I: announcements of calls for papers at various national and regional philosophy conferences for students.  Students who submit papers and get invited to read their papers at these conferences sometimes win significant prizes and get their transportation to and from the conferences paid.  Check for details below:

  1. Intercollegiate Studies Institute International Student Essay Contest (Compete for over $20,000 in prizes for essay contest, answering the question: "Can Character & Communities Survive in an Age of Globalization?"  1st prize = $10,000; 2nd prize = $5,000, etc.)

  2. Annual Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest 2007 (1st prize = $5000, 2nd = $2500, 3rd = $1500, honorable mention = $500)

  3. William E. Simon Fellowship for Noble Purpose (for graduating seniors: 1st prize = $40,000, two 2nd prizes = $5000 each; LRC students contact Dr. Philip Blosser, campus ext. 7186)

  4. Richard M. Weaver Fellowship (pays tuition at the school attended by the recipient and a stipend of $5,000. More than 400 Weaver graduate fellowships have been granted since the program's inception in 1964.) 

  5. Western Civilization Fellowship (each recipient $20,000 for graduate work related to Western Civilization studies. Three of these graduate fellowships are awarded annually.)

  6. Salvatori Fellowship (provides $10,000 to each awardee for graduate work related to the American Founding. Two of these graduate fellowships are awarded annually.)

  7. The State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research Symposium -- Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005 (The showcasing of multidisciplinary undergraduate research scholarship from all 53 state and private colleges and universities and 58 community colleges of North Carolina -- for promising students to present scholarly or artistic work, test their ideas, and gain a measure of themselves).

Part II: announcements of prizes and honors won by Lenoir-Rhyne students for papers or articles that have been written for classes, presented at conferences, or published.  Check for details below:

  1. Best annual philosophy paper (2005-2006)

  2. Best annual Lenoir-Rhynean essay on religion (2003-2004: Joseph Benjamin Farrar, "Why People Go to Church")

  3. Best term paper in Philosophy of Religion 

  4. Best term paper in Ancient & Medieval Philosophy
