Center for Theology

Dear Colleagues,

The Center for Theology at Lenoir-Rhyne College regularly convenes colloquia on “first Thursdays” during the academic year to discuss issues of faith and life, theology and ethics.  As “first Thursday” is this year Maundy Thursday, the April Colloquium will be 2nd Thursday (April 12th) at 4:00 p.m., in the Bears’ Lair Atrium of the Cromer Center .

Dr. Hans Schwarz, professor emeritus at Regensburg University of Germany and currently visiting professor at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, has been a guest at Lenoir-Rhyne College before. We are pleased to welcome him again to the Center for Theology colloquium and our campus.  Dr. Schwarz is Doktorvater to Dr. David Ratke of our theology program.  Nathan Yoder (LRC, ’98) is currently in Regensburg , studying under Dr. Schwarz’ direction.

The title of Dr. Schwarz’ presentation for Thursday the 12th is Faith and Science ¾  Opposition or Necessary Complementarity?  In the paper he examines first the dimensions of “the structure of scientific knowledge, and then “the structure of Christian knowledge,” as to the central characteristics of each.  His concluding section is entitled “the mutuality of faith and knowledge,” which gives the reader a notion of the direction of his argument.  The paper is attached to this letter, in order to enable participants to prepare for the discussion by reading in advance.

We welcome Dr. Schwarz back for what has become a “biennial” participation in the colloquium series.  This should be again a lively and informative discussion!  Again, the April Colloquium is Thursday the 12th, beginning at 4:00 in the Bears’ Lair. Invite your friends.  See you there.

The Rev. J. Larry Yoder, PhD, STS

Director
