The following are service opportunities that have been extended to LR students to give them a chance to make the world better.
The Big Sweep is coming up on Oct. 4. Yes, that is the same day as Homecoming. However, the LIFE Club is planning on attending after the parade and will coordinate rides for those wishing to help out. The Big Sweep is a day devoted to cleaning up trash in and around Lake Hickory. Lenoir-Rhyne has had an active involvement in this endeavor for the past several years and we hope to continue this involvement. If protecting the environment and making Hickory a more beautiful and a more healthy place to live interests you, sign up for The Big Sweep.
Hickory's Castle of Cans. I hope that you have all seen the big red barrels placed throughout campus. Circle K is collecting canned food items until Oct. 8 to donate to the Metrolina Food Bank. As the winter months and the holidays approach, food banks tend to run low of supplies. Help quash hunger this year and make a donation of canned food to Hickory's Castle of Cans. You can find the red barrels outside the cafeteria, outside the Bear's Lair, at the main entrance of the Rhyne Building, the McCrorie Center, Fritz-Conrad, and the LLC.
The Domestic Violence Resource Center is looking for an handful of volunteers to tie purple bows for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Bows will be placed throughout the Hickory area to raise awareness of the tragedy of domestic violence. There will also be several candlelight vigils this month in which students are invited to attend.
The Youth Development Alliance is needing some students on Oct. 25 to help with the "Pumpkin Party" at Hickory Museum of Art. The party is a gathering for underprivileged children and their families which gives them a chance to have a day of fun. The YDA is needing about 15 volunteers to run games and serve snacks.
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
will be held on the campus of LR on Oct. 18. We are needing volunteers for set up, tear down, water distribution, and some other odds and ends. Also, it is not too late to participate in the 5K run/walk if that is your desire
Alternative Spring Break. Its time to start thinking about March. Every year, LR gives students the opportunity to make the most of their time off for spring break by participating in a Habitat for Humanity service project somewhere in the U.S. This year we will do the same. Keep your eyes open and your e-mails read for interest meeting dates. We will decide on a location for service at that time.
