 Service-Learning

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is service-learning?
According to Learn and Serve America, service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Where is service-learning incorporated?
Service-Learning is incorporated in the classroom. Faculty typically work with local non-profit organizations in order to get students to see beyond the walls of school and get a little "real world" experience.

So then it's not community service?
Typically the students do participate in a community service project for the organization, but the reason for that is so the students build a stronger connection to the organization they are working with.

Faculty who's curriculum include a service-learning project but have not yet determined what site you will be working at can email AmeriCorps *VISTA, Candace Semmel for assistance in booking an organization.
