LENOIR-RHYNE COLLEGE

RESIDENCE HALL CONTRACT AGREEMENT

The purpose of this document is to establish the terms and conditions of the room contract at Lenoir-Rhyne University.  This document constitutes an offer by Lenoir-Rhyne University, hereinafter referred to as “the college”, to contract with the student, hereinafter also referred to as “you”, for housing.  The Cub, Lenoir-Rhyne University’s student handbook, is also incorporated by reference into this contract

1.     Eligibility and Residency Requirements--Unless special permission is granted by the Student Affairs Office, a resident of campus housing must be enrolled as a full time student at Lenoir-Rhyne University in order to occupy a residence hall room.  All full time first, second and third year students are required to live in campus housing unless they are: a) 24 years old or older; b) live with parents/legal guardians within 30 miles of campus; c) married; d) veteran; e) independent of all parental financial support for tax purposes; and/or; f) parents.  All students entering Lenoir-Rhyne University for the first time beginning with the Freshmen class for Fall Semester 1998 will be required to live on campus their first, second, and third years.

2.     Duration--This agreement obligates you to live in the residence hall for the entire academic year, or if entered into after the start of the Fall Semester, for the remainder of the academic year.  Summer term is regarded as a separate agreement.

3.     Occupancy--Residence hall opening and closing times for specific academic terms are announced in advance by the Student Affairs Office.  Students may occupy an assigned space from the date designated as the official opening of campus housing to the date designated as the official date and time of the residence hall closing.  Graduating students will be provided housing through commencement without additional charge.  The residence halls are closed during all college breaks.  Students are required to vacate their rooms.

4.     Room Assignments--The University will not discriminate in room/hall assignments on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin.  This agreement is for residence in campus housing and not for a particular accommodation, room or roommate; however, consideration will be given to students’ preferences and requests.  The University reserves the right to assign roommates and/or to change room or hall assignments, including consolidation of occupancy as spaces are vacated.

5.     Room Changes and Consolidation--When a student is living alone in a double room, the University reserves the right to assign a second occupant to that room or to charge the student a single occupancy fee.  If one of the occupants of a room moves out, the remaining occupant must accept another roommate, move to another room, or pay for a single room.  Residents without roommates may be reassigned to another room.

6.     Board--All residence hall students are required to purchase and participate in a meal/board plan.

7.     Termination--If, for any reason, your enrollment at the University is terminated during the course of an academic term, you must vacate your room within 24 hours.  Similarly, if the University decides to terminate this contract for disciplinary reasons, you must move out of your room within 24 hours.

8.     Vacations--During regularly scheduled vacation periods such as Semester (Christmas) Break, Spring Break, May Graduation through Summer Session, and the close of Summer Session to the stated Fall Semester opening, all residence halls are closed.  You may not occupy your assigned room during these periods.

9.     Damage Charges--Charges for damage in rooms, hallways, lobbies and public areas will be assessed to the residents of that room, floor, or building.

10. Liability--The University does not assume any legal obligation or responsibility for injury to individuals, or loss or damage to personal property.  Students are encouraged to carry appropriate insurance to cover any loss of, or damage to, personal property occurring in its buildings or on its grounds.

11. Cancellation--Students not required to live on campus or not enrolling in the college must notify the Residence Life Department in writing by June 30 to cancel this agreement.  Contracts canceled between June 30 and August 1 will be assessed a $200.00 fine.  Contracts canceled after August 1 or during the Academic year will be assessed a $600.00 fine.  Upon reasonable notice and for good cause, the University reserves the right to terminate this agreement at any time.  Violations of residence hall or University policies are considered sufficient grounds for immediate termination of this agreement and removal from the residence halls.

12. Student Responsibility--The residence halls are considered private property reserved for the exclusive use of resident students, invited guests, and authorized University personnel.  Residents and their guests are responsible for upholding all University and residence hall policies, respecting the rights and safety of others, and complying with the requests of college staff.

13. Addenda--All regulations and policies appearing in the most recent Lenoir-Rhyne University Catalog and The Cub and revisions periodically instituted by the University and the Residence Life Department are made a part of this agreement.
