Resident Advisor Job Description

Resident Advisor (RA)

 

Resident Advisors are usually the first residence life staff person that residents meet. RA's are undergraduate students who have been selected and specifically trained to assist residents within the halls. RA's are a vital link between their peers on the hall and the Residence Life Office as well as other departments around campus. RA responsibilities include: Helping to develop a sense of community on the hall through social events, educational opportunities and other activities; informing residents about events happening on campus; enforcing College and residence hall policies; acting as peer counselors; and assisting professional staff in crisis situations.

 

 

 

RA Selection Process

 

Applications are made available for the upcoming fall semester mid-January. The timeline for the application and selection process will be posted.  The selection process consists of 1)completing an application, 2) obtaining three references, 3) attending a candidate meeting, 4) attending a group processing activity, 5) an individual interview conducted by a current RA's and RD's, and 6) a individual interview conducted by the Associate Dean of students (by invitation only).

Qualifications and Requirements

 

  1. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Lenoir-Rhyne College for the entire in-service academic year.

  2. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to apply.

  3. Applicants must have at least sophomore status by the prior fall semester.

  4. Applicants must have lived in a Residence Hall for at least 1 semester in order to apply.

General Statement of Duties

 

The Residence Life Department supports the philosophy that a college education facilitates the development of the total person and recognizes residence hall living as an integral part of the educational process at Lenoir-Rhyne College.  

 

It is the responsibility of every staff member: 

  1. to provide assistance, support, and leadership to individual students and student groups in the residence halls; 

  2. to promote educational growth and development among resident students;

  3. to foster interpersonal skills, appreciation of individual differences, and responsibility within the community environment among resident students;

  4. to clearly communicate and consistently enforce policies within the residence halls;

  5. to ensure residence halls are appealing and safe places to live.

Position Requirements

 

  1. RA’s are required to maintain a GPA of 2.5 per semester and cumulatively.

  2. RA’s are expected to be visible and available to their residents on a consistent basis.

  3. RA’s are not permitted to enter into any employment situation, internship, student leadership role, or other significant commitment (paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time) without a written request to and approval from their Residence Director.

  4.  RA’s are required to attend designated training and staff development workshops during Spring Semester, prior to the beginning of Fall Semester, prior to Hall opening in January, and throughout the year such as RA In-Service Training.

  5. The RA Staff is responsible for sharing in nightly duty coverage of the building on a rotating schedule. The RA on duty is required to remain in the residence hall. Each Residence Director may designate the specific location within the residence hall where the RA must be while performing duty responsibilities.

  6.  RA’s accept full responsibility for any and all keys to which they have access. The loss of any key may result in a charge for re-keying affected doors and/or termination from the RA position.  Master keys may only be used for official purposes, which are directly related to job responsibilities as instructed by professional staff.

  7. RA’s must remain in good standing with the College, academically and judicially. RA’s must know, support, implement and abide by College policies and regulations.

  8. RA’s must limit weekends away (preferably once per month) and must consult with his/her Residence Director before planning weekends away.

  9. RA’s must accept the building and room assignment given by the Residence Life Department and acknowledge the right of the Residence Life Department to make any changes in assignment as necessary.

  10. RA’s will comply with the guidelines established by supervisors, this position description and the staff manual.

  11. RA’s report directly to the Residence Director but also maintain a close working relationship with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

  12. RA’s are full-time undergraduate students at Lenoir-Rhyne College.

Educational and Community Building Responsibilities

 

  1.  Identify interests and needs of student by formal and informal assessment/contact.

  2. Be a resource person and referral agent for College and community services by directing residents to other individuals, organizations, and programs related to their interests and needs.  Facilitate positive interactions among residents and staff.

  3. Actively implement and/or present residence hall programs, which broaden residents’ experiences and awareness.  Over the course of the academic year, each RA must complete the stated program expectations. 

  4. Promote student-faculty interaction through faculty involvement in residence hall programs and activities.

  5. Create and consistently update/change designated Bulletin Board space (typically once per month).

  6. Encourage and support Residence Area Council activities.

  7. Become acquainted with all residents as early as possible and establish relationships with each person on the floor so they feel comfortable sharing areas of concern.  Facilitate positive interpersonal relationships within the hall; make introductions, stimulate conversations.

  8.  Encourage residents to act with reason, to assume responsibility for their own actions, and to be considerate of the rights and freedoms of others.  Maintain an atmosphere appropriate for academic pursuits within the residence hall.

  9. Assist the floor in developing living expectations and standards; establish policies to insure these expectations are met.

  10. Be approachable and available to meet the needs of residents.  Assist residents with adjustment and emotional issues.

  11. Respect the need for confidentiality in dealing with students and other staff.

  12. Set a positive example for others in personal, academic and social behaviors on and off campus.

  13. Perform other educational and community building duties and expectations as directed by his/her Residence Director.

Administrative Responsibilities

 

  1. Abide by and consistently enforce all College, Residence Life policies, and state laws.

  2. Assist the custodial staff in keeping hall facilities functional for the use of all residents.

  3.  Investigate and report room, hall, and public area damage.

  4. Assist with reports as required.

  5. Assist in performing administrative duties.  These include completing room rosters, distribution of information, and assisting with resident check-in and check-out each term.  This will involve remaining in the building until closing and returning early to assist with opening.

  6. Make referrals to Residence Director in disciplinary matters.

  7. Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings, RA In-Services, and one-on-one meetings with your Residence Director.

  8. Assist in the selection of new RA staff, as directed.

  9. Be thoroughly familiar with all emergency procedures.

  10. Serve on committees as needed.

  11. Perform other administrative duties and expectations as directed by his/her Residence Director.

Remuneration

  1. Each RA will receive a stipend for the academic year equal to the cost of a double room.

  2. Each RA will receive a private room at the cost of a double room, pending availability of housing space.

  3. Each RA will receive one parking decal for his/her personal car for the  academic year at no cost.
