Emergency Procedures Guide and Guidelines for Lenoir-Rhyne College

MEDICAL AND FIRST AID

  1. The Lenoir-Rhyne College Security and Safety Officer can provide you with assistance in cases of minor injury, or illness.  The security and safety officer may be contacted by dialing “0” from any College telephone.

  2. When treating a minor injury or illness, only sterile first aid materials should be used.  First aid care should be given only by trained personnel.

  3. In case of serious injury or illness, only trained personnel should quickly perform the following steps:

    1. Keep the victim still and comfortable.  DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM.

    2. Ask the victim “are you okay” and “what is wrong”?

    3. Check breathing and give artificial respiration if necessary.

    4. Control serious bleeding by direct pressure on the wound.

    5. Continue to assist the victim until help arrives.

    6. Look for emergency medical ID, question witness(es) and give all information to      the paramedics.

    7. Serious injury or illness should be reported to the Catawba County Communications Center by dialing 911 as soon as possible so that the paramedics may be dispatched to the location.

  4. Once again, only trained personnel should render first aid treatment to the victim.  It is College policy to have persons trained in first aid and CPR strategically placed throughout the campus.

CHEMICAL OR RADIATION SPILL

  1. Any spillage of a hazardous chemical or radioactive material should be reported to the security/safety officer as soon as possible.  The security/safety officer on duty may be contacted from any College telephone by dialing “0”.

  2. When reporting, be specific about the nature of the involved material and the exact location.  The security/safety officer will contact the necessary specialized authorities and medical personnel.

  3. The key person on the site should evacuate the affected area at once.  The area should be sealed off to prevent further contamination of other areas until the arrival of the security/safety officer, or other EMERGENCY personnel.

  4. Anyone who may be contaminated by the spill is to avoid contact with others as much as possible, remain in the vicinity and give their name(s) to the security/safety officer.  Required first aid and clean-up specialized authorities should be started at once.

  5. If an emergency exists, activate the building alarm.  CAUTION, the building alarm only rings within the building, you must report the emergency by telephone.

  6. When the building evacuation alarm is sounded, an emergency exists.  Walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.

  7. Assist the handicapped in exiting the building!  Remember that the elevators are reserved for handicapped persons.  DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS IN CASE OF FIRE.  DO NOT PANIC.

  8. Once outside, move to a clear area at least 500 feet away from the affected area, or building(s).  Keep streets, walkways, hydrants and fire lanes clear for emergency vehicles and crews.

  9. If requested, assist emergency crews as necessary.

  10. A Campus Emergency Command Post may be set up near the emergency site.  Keep clear of the Command Post unless you have official business.

  11. Do not return to an evacuated building unless you are told to do so by a College official.

  12. IMPORTANT:  After any evacuation, report to your designated campus area assembly point.  Stay there until an accurate headcount is taken.  The Senior Building Coordinator will take attendance and assist in the accounting for all building occupants.
