Emergency Procedures Guide and Guidelines for Lenoir-Rhyne University

VIOLENT OR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR

  1. Security and Safety on campus are coordinated by the Security Department.  The Security office conducts both foot and vehicular patrol of the campus twenty-four hours a day.  The Security office is located in the Cromer Center.  The security/safety officer on duty may be contacted any time of the day or night by dialing extension # 7146, or “0” from any University telephone.  If you are calling from a private telephone, you should dial 328-7146.  Emergency situations may also be reported by dialing 9-911 (Catawba County Communications Center), or 9-328-5551 (Hickory Police Department).

  2. Everyone is asked to assist in making the campus a safe place by being alert to suspicious situations and promptly reporting them.

  3. If you are a victim, or a witness to any on campus offense, avoid risk!  Promptly notify the security and safety officer on duty and report the incident, including the following:

    1. The nature of the incident.

    2. The location of the incident.

    3. The description of person(s) involved.

    4. The description of property involved.

  4. Assist the officer(s) when they arrive by giving the complete information, ask others to cooperate and provide information.

  5. Should gunfire, or discharged explosives be involved in an incident, you should take cover immediately, using all available cover and concealment.  After the incident, seek emergency first aid if necessary.

  6. What to do if taken hostage:

    1. Be patient.  Time is on your side.  Avoid drastic action.

    2. The initial forty-five (45) minutes are the most dangerous.  Follow instructions, be alert and stay alive.  The captor is emotionally imbalanced.  Don’t make mistakes which could be a hazard to your well-being.

    3. Don’t speak unless spoken to and t hen only when necessary.  Don’t talk down to the captor who may be in an agitated state.  Avoid appearing hostile.  Maintain eye contact at all time if possible, but do not stare.  Treat the captor like royalty.

    4. Try to rest.  Avoid speculating.  Comply with instructions as best you can.  Avoid arguments.  Expect the unexpected.

    5. Be observant.  You may be released or escape.  The personal safety of others may depend on your memory.

    6. Be prepared to answer the police on the telephone.  Be patient, wait.  Attempt to establish rapport with the captor.  If medications, first aid, or restroom privileges are needed by anyone, say so.  The captors in all probability do not want to harm persons held by them.  Such direct actions further implicate the captor in additional offenses.

  7. IMPORTANT:  After any evacuation, report to your designated campus assembly point.  Stay there until an accurate headcount is taken.  The Senior Building Emergency Coordinator will take attendance and assist in the accounting for all occupants.
