Emergency Procedures Guide and Guidelines for Lenoir-Rhyne College

LENOIR-RHYNE COLLEGE EVACUATION PLAN

EVACUATION OF ALL, OR PORTIONS OF THE L-RC CAMPUS

  1. JUSTIFICATION:  Evacuation of all, or part of Lenoir-Rhyne College is not something that we wish, or expect to do.  However, in spite of the low probability of the occurrence of such circumstances that would require evacuation, the possibility does exist.  Such emergencies as a bomb threat, hazardous materials leaking into the environment, nuclear disaster, fire and civil disturbance can quickly develop a need for this plan.

  2. SERVICES:  It is only normal that we expect the Department of Security and Safety to receive the first notice of an emergency that may require evacuation.  Security personnel will in turn notify the Lenoir-Rhyne College Task Force Leader and advise him of the situation.  The Task Force Leader must then make two decisions.

    1. Does the situation require the response of the entire Task Force, or can normal College operations be utilized?  If the Task Force is needed, the Task Force Leader will have campus security notify all other members of the Task Force that an emergency exist and the location where they are to assemble for emergency operations.

    2. The Task Force Leader will have to determine if evacuation of all, or part of the campus will be necessary.  This decision should be made the Task Force Leader of his/her alternate.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

  1. BUILDING EVACUATION:

    1. All building evacuations will occur when an alarm sounds and/or upon notification by security/safety personnel, or the building coordinator.  DO NOT ACTIVATE ALARM IN THE EVENT OF A BOMB THREAT.

    2. When the building evacuation alarm is activated during an emergency, leave by the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.

    3. Assist the handicapped in exiting the building!  Remember that the elevators are reserved for handicapped persons.  DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS IN CASE OF FIRE. DO NOT PANIC.

    4. Once outside, proceed to a clear area that is at least 500 feet away from the affected area, or building.  Keep streets, fire lanes, hydrant areas and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel.  Know your area assembly points.

    5. DO NOT RETURN to an evacuated building unless told to do so by a College official.

  2. CAMPUS EVACUATION:

    1. Evacuation of all or part of the campus grounds will be announced by Security and Safety personnel as described.

    2. All persons (student and staff) are to immediately vacate the site in question and relocated to another part of the campus as directed.

    3. IMPORTANT:  After any evacuation, report to your designated area assembly point.  Stay there until an accurate headcount is taken.  The Senior Building Emergency Coordinator will take attendance and assist in the accounting for all building occupants.
